Australia's "very concerned" about "punishment for mentioning human rights issues for Olympic athletes"

Australian wine also participated at the Chinese International Import Expo (CIE) held in Shanghai, China, on November 5 last year (local time).

The Chinese authorities warned, "We will punish athletes participating in the Beijing Winter Olympics, which will open on the 4th of next month, if they mention Chinese human rights issues." In this regard, the Australian government officially said it is "very concerned."

On the 20th, Yang Su, deputy head of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee's Foreign Liaison Division, said at a video press conference, "We will punish Olympic athletes for violating the spirit of the Olympics and Chinese law."

Deputy General Manager Yang said, "We guarantee expressions that conform to the spirit of the Olympics. However, actions or remarks contrary to the Olympic spirit, especially violations of Chinese laws and regulations, will surely be punished, he said.

"If you violate the Olympic spirit and Chinese law by making sensitive remarks to China and others, you can cancel the registration of athletes as punishment," he stressed.

Article 50 of the Olympic Charter prohibits political, religious, and racial propaganda and agitation in stadiums.

According to the British daily media Guardian on the 21st, Australian Sports Minister Richard Colbeck interviewed a local journalist, Sydney Morning Herald. He said, "I am very concerned about the Chinese authorities' decision to punish athletes for human rights issues at the Beijing Winter Olympics," adding, "The Australian government opposed China's recommendation and guaranteed free remarks by athletes on the Olympic stage."

"The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made it clear that all athletes have the right to express their political views and speak freely through social media and media interviews," Colbeck said. "So threats aimed at Australian athletes are very worrisome and the Australian government does not support them at all."

Meanwhile, at last year's Tokyo Summer Olympics, such regulations were eased so that political intentions could be expressed at the stadium if they paid respect to the athletes without causing confusion.

IOC confirmed that athletes can freely express their opinions at press conferences and interviews if they are during the game or are not at the awards ceremony.

Australia joined the Beijing Olympics diplomatic boycott with the United States, Britain, and Canada, citing human rights and diplomatic concerns. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in December last year that the decision was "for the benefit of Australia.“
