미국을 비롯해 여러 나라에서 임금이 상승했다. 하지만 오른 게 아니었다. 임금보다 물가가 더 올랐다.
물가 상승으로 실질임금은 하락세의 지속이다. 이는 소비자들의 구매력을 떨구리라는 지적이다. 소비 위축 전망이 나오고 있다.
20일 미 노동통계국(BLS) 통계에 따르면 “물가상승률을 반영해 조정한 미국 2월 시간당 평균 실질임금은 직전 달 대비 0.8% 감소했다.”면서 “임금이 거의 제자리였지만 도시 소비자물가가 0.8% 올랐기 때문”이라고 지적했다. 1년 전과 비교했을 때 실질임금은 2.6% 줄었다는 것.
미국의 2월 민간 부문 임금은 1년 전보다 5.1% 올랐다. 그러나 물가 상승세가 훨신 가팔랐다. 식품과 에너지 가격 급등에 따라 미국의 2월 소비자물가지수(CPI) 상승률은 전년 대비 7.9%로 40년 만에 최고를 기록했다.
지난달 24일 러시아의 우크라이나 침공으로 국제유가가 한때 배럴당 130달러를 넘고 금속과 밀 등 곡물 가격도 폭등하면서 현재 물가 급등세는 한동안 이어질 전망이다.
각종 조사에서는 이미 소비자들이 물가 급등의 영향을 체감하고 있다는 것이 나타난다.

영국 통계청(ONS)에 따르면 지난해 11월∼올해 1월 3개월간 보너스를 제외한 평균 임금은 1년 전보다 3.8% 올랐다. 하지만 인플레이션 조정 후의 실질 임금은 같은 기간 1.0% 하락했고, 보너스를 합쳐야 0.1% 상승인 것으로 나타났다.
호주 역시 작년 한 해 동안 호주 평균 임금은 2.3% 올랐지만 소비자물가는 3.5% 상승했다. 독일도 지난해 실질임금이 감소했다.
