러시아 당국은 “푸틴 대통령의 '연봉'이 1억 7,000만 원에 불과하고, 고향에 77㎡ 아파트 1채만 소유하고 있다”면서 '검소함'을 강조하고 있다.
하지만 서방 언론들은 푸틴 대통령의 재산을 최대 243조 원으로 추산하고 있다. 여러 사람 이름으로 쪼개 숨겼다는 것.

영국은 최근 석유·가스용 강관 제조업체 운영자인 러시아 재벌 드미트리 펌푸얀스키의 917억짜리 호화 요트 악시오마를, 스페인 정부는 러시아 대기업 로스테크 대표 세르게이 체메조프의 1880억 짜리 요트 '발레리'를 압류했다.
프랑스도 러시아 신흥 부호 자산 약 1조 원을 동결했다.
푸틴 대통령의 절친 로만 아브라모비치 첼시 구단주는 제재가 없는 터키로 피신했다. 하지만 현지 시위대로부터 격렬한 항의를 받았다.
윌리엄 번스 미국 중앙정보국 국장도 최근 "푸틴 대통령이 불만과 야망이 뒤섞인 감정 속에서 살아왔다"고 분석했다.

국제 탐사보도 단체인 조직범죄·부패 보도 프로젝트 'OCCRP'(Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project)는 21일(현지시간) 홈페이지를 통해 푸틴 대통령과 그의 주요 인사들이 비도덕적으로 쌓은 자산을 추적하고 데이터화하는 작업을 시작한다고 밝혔다.
OCCRP는 "우리는 푸틴 집단에 대한 문서 증거를 통해 토지, 저택, 회사, 보트, 비행기, 그리고 다른 가치 있는 것들을 찾아봤다"면서 "이런 자산 중 일부는 이전에 보고된 적이 있다. 일부는 여기서 처음 공개될 것"이라고 전했다.
또 "현재로선 175억 달러(약 21조)가 넘는 자산을 찾아냈다"고 덧붙였다.
OCCRP는 먼저 러시아 야당 지도자 알렉세이 나발니가 이끄는 반부패재단이 작성한 푸틴 정권을 도운 사람 35명의 명단부터 살펴본다고 밝혔다. OCCRP는 앞으로 더 많은 부동산, 요트 등을 찾아 데이터베이스를 정기적으로 업데이트한다는 계획이다.
OCCRP는 "22년간의 블라디미르 푸틴의 통치는 과두 정치인들, 안보 당국자 등 수혜자들에게 막대한 부를 가져다 줬다"면서 "평범한 러시아인들은 최근 몇 년 간 수입이 정체됐지만, 부유층은 고급 제트기를 타고, 지중해 저택에서 휴식을 취하고, 세계 최대 요트를 타고 바다를 누빈다. 자녀들은 고급 나이트클럽을 전전하고 세계 일류대학에서 명문교육을 받는다"라고 프로젝트 취지에 대해 설명했다.
OCCRP는 동유럽과 중앙아시아 독립 탐사매체들의 네트워크로 2007년 출범했다. 이번 추적에는 영국 가디언지 등 다른 서방 국가 매체들도 참여한다고 한다.
가디언에 따르면 OCCRP가 추적하는 인물 중에는 푸틴 대통령의 측근인 로만 아브라모비치, 알리셔 우스마노프, 올레그 데리파스카, 이고르 슈발로프 등이 포함됐다.

Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCP), an international exploration and reporting organization, announced on its website on the 21st (local time) that President Putin and his key figures will begin tracking and dataing their unscrupulous assets.
OCCRP said, "We have looked for land, mansions, companies, boats, airplanes, and other valuable things through documentary evidence against the Putin group," adding, "Some of these assets have been reported before." Some of them will be released for the first time here."

OCCRP said it will first look at the list of 35 people who helped Putin's regime by the anti-corruption foundation led by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. OCCRP plans to regularly update its database in search of more real estate and yachts in the future.
"The 22 years of Vladimir Putin's rule has brought enormous wealth to beneficiaries such as oligarchs and security officials," OCCRP said.
