이 사고로 49세 남성과 7세 소년 등 2명이 현장에서 사망하고 2명이 크게 다쳤다.
머리와 복부에 중상을 입은 50세 여성과 14세 소년은 사고 현장을 목격한 다른 등산객의 신고로 긴급 출동한 응급 구조 헬기에 의해 가까운 병원으로 옮겨져 치료를 받고 있다.
뉴사우스웨일스(NSW)주 경찰은 "불행하게도 갑작스러운 산사태가 등산길을 걷고 있던 다섯 명의 가족을 덮쳤다"면서 "이 사고로 위에서 떨어지는 돌더미에 깔려 두 명이 숨졌다"고 확인했다.
마크 그린힐 블루마운틴 시장은 "주민이든 아니든, 아름다운 블루마운틴 안에 있다면 같은 마음일 것"이라면서 "우리 모두가 이 아픔과 슬픔을 함께 한다"고 애도의 뜻을 전했다.
