한국광해광업공단은 지난달 29일 서울 트레이드타워에서 주한호주대사관과 함께 양국 광물 수요·공급 현황을 공유하기 위한 광업 세미나를 열었다고 1일 밝혔다.
공단은 국내 민간기업의 호주 광물시장 이해를 높이고 현지 진출 방안을 모색하고자 이번 세미나를 열었다. 호주 핵심광물진흥국이 호주 핵심광물 공급망 협력 기회를 주제로 발표하고 호주 광물연구센터가 호주 배터리 산업의 미래를 발표했다.
고순도 저탄소 알루미늄 기반 리튬이온 배터리와 LED 조명, 신기술 활용 배터리 음극재 재사용 방안, 호주 최신 핵심광물시장 동향을 주제로 한 현지 기업의 발표도 이어졌다. 공단 역시 우리나라 핵심광물 정책을 소개했다.
호주는 세계 최대 규모 철광 광산을 보유한 것은 물론 구리, 티타늄, 희토류 등 핵심 광물을 다량 보유했다. 자원 부국이다. 광해광업공단은 광물자원 안정 수급을 위한 산업통상자원부 산하 공공기관이다. 공단은 양국 광물 부문 협업 확대를 위해 올 2월 호주광물협회와 호주 광물개발 기업 아라프라(Arafura)와 정보교환 협약을 맺기도 했다.
공단은 이번 세미나를 시작으로 국내 민간기업이 진출을 희망하는 중국, 캐나다 등 주요 광물보유국과 광업 세미나를 열 계획이다. 윤석열 대통령 당선인의 대통령직인수위원회는 지난 4월 6일 민간이 주도하고 공공 부문에서 이를 돕는다는 내용의 해외자원 확보 방안을 발표한 바 있다. 미ㆍ중 무역분쟁과 우크라이나-러시아 사태 같은 국제 공급망 불안정 속 우리도 자원 확보에 힘 쏟되 민간 부문을 중심으로 활성화하겠다는 것이다.
황규연 공단 사장은 “공단은 앞으로도 국내 민간기업이 호주를 비롯한 해외 주요국 자원개발 사업에 진출할 수 있도록 종합 광업 서비스를 제공해나가겠다”고 말했다.

The Korea Mining and Mining Corporation announced on the 1st that it held a mining seminar at the Trade Tower in Seoul on the 29th of last month to share the current status of demand and supply of minerals from both countries with the Australian Embassy in Korea.
The corporation held the seminar to enhance Korean private companies' understanding of the Australian mineral market and seek ways to enter the local market. The Australian Core Minerals Promotion Agency announced the future of the Australian battery industry under the theme of opportunities for cooperation in Australia's core mineral supply chain.
Local companies also announced on high-purity, low-carbon aluminum-based lithium-ion batteries and LED lighting, ways to reuse battery cathode materials using new technologies, and trends in Australia's latest core mineral market. The corporation also introduced Korea's core mineral policy.
Australia has the world's largest iron mine, as well as a large number of key minerals such as copper, titanium, and rare earths. It is a resource rich country. The Gwanghae Mining Corporation is a public institution under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for the stable supply and demand of mineral resources. The corporation signed an information exchange agreement with the Australian Mineral Association and Australian mineral development company Arafura in February this year to expand cooperation in the mineral sector between the two countries.
Starting with this seminar, the corporation plans to hold mining seminars with major mineral-holding countries such as China and Canada, which domestic private companies hope to enter. President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol's presidential transition committee announced on April 6 a plan to secure overseas resources, which is led by the private sector and helps in the public sector. Amid instability in the international supply chain such as the U.S.-China trade dispute and the Ukraine-Russia crisis, South Korea will also focus on securing resources but revitalize the private sector.
Hwang Kyu-yeon, president of the corporation, said, "The corporation will continue to provide comprehensive mining services so that domestic private companies can enter resource development projects in major overseas countries, including Australia.“
