According to the British daily Guardian on the 19th (local time), Australia's NSW State Senate passed a bill that allows conditional euthanasia by 23 votes to 15 after a long discussion.
In Australia, the New South Wales (NSW) state legislature has passed a bill conditionally allowing euthanasia. This makes euthanasia legal in all states of Australia.
The bill targets Australian citizens aged 18 or older or residents who have the mental capacity to make their own decisions. It allows people to end their lives on their own if they are about to die or suffer intolerable pain. You can apply within 12 months for neurodegenerative diseases and within 6 months for other cases.
Patients applying for euthanasia should be able to make their own decisions without external pressure. If you apply, you will be reviewed by two doctors.
After passing the House of Representatives in November last year, the bill was revised to the Senate. The Senate amendment is expected to take effect within 18 months if it is approved by the State House of Representatives.
NSW is the last of six Australian states to legalize euthanasia. Victoria passed the euthanasia bill for the first time in 2017 and has been in effect since 2019. Later in the same year, other states, starting with Western Australia, passed a series of laws legalizing euthanasia.
However, except for Victoria and Western Australia, the passed legislation has not yet been implemented.
According to local polls, 74% of NSW residents believe that terminally ill patients living in elderly care facilities should not be prevented from accessing voluntary euthanasia.
