Recent controversy surrounding personal information leaks and lottery rigging
Break News, Park Dong-je = Weverse, a global fandom platform and subsidiary of HYBE, has apologized for the personal information leak and lottery rigging controversy.
Weverse Company CEO Choi Jun-won issued an official statement on the 5th, stating, "We recently confirmed that an internal employee unauthorizedly leaked another person's personal information and attempted to use it for personal purposes." He added, "This incident goes beyond the individual's misconduct; Weverse Company's poor management of its members is a significant responsibility. We deeply apologize to the fans who have trusted and used Weverse Company."
CEO Choi stated, "An employee in the department responsible for fan events inquired with the relevant department regarding a fan signing event, which was not his/her responsibility, about whether a specific applicant had won. Following this, he/she was able to obtain information on the applicant's year of birth in addition to their name through subsequent conversation. The employee's name and year of birth were shared in a private KakaoTalk group chat with six fans of the same artist. The employee also attempted to interfere with the event winners, but no intervention or alteration occurred. Ultimately, the applicant was confirmed to have won and participated in the event."
He continued, "We have confirmed that the employee, for personal purposes, captured the list of winners of a specific public broadcast event and shared the names, dates of birth, and phone numbers of 30 winners in the same private group chat. We are conducting an in-depth investigation into whether the employee engaged in any obstruction of business or illegal activity to encourage participation in fan events, including public broadcasts, and have requested a thorough investigation by investigative authorities."
CEO Choi stated, "In addition to the matters mentioned above, numerous violations of internal regulations and illegal acts, including breach of trust and obstruction of business, were identified during the investigation. The company immediately suspended the employee in question from his/her duties, referred the matter to the personnel committee, and filed a criminal complaint. While we are taking strict action in accordance with legal procedures, we will faithfully cooperate with any future requests from investigative authorities." He added, "We recognize this incident as a serious issue that has undermined the trust we have built in the operation of fan events and the management of personal information. Taking this as an opportunity, the company is comprehensively reviewing its management system and employee training to implement improvements to prevent recurrence." They also stated, "After investigating the fan event process, we will swiftly address any deficiencies. We are currently investigating the relevant department members, and we will quickly identify and implement systemic improvements and institutional improvements not only for this issue but also for the entire process. To this end, we have formed an internal task force to begin discussions and are reviewing the entire process, from pre-announcement to the winner selection and announcement." They added, "We will address fans' concerns and swiftly implement improvements to prevent similar issues from recurring. We will share the details of these improvements at a later date."
They added, "We plan to re-evaluate our current work processes and systems to enhance security by improving the overall work environment to ensure the safe handling of personal information. We will strengthen the security control system for personal information handlers and operate a more stringent, continuous monitoring environment." They added, "Weverse prioritizes responsible service operation and strives to become a platform that fans can trust and use with confidence."
