그러나 골퍼에게 호수는 풍경이 아니었다. 위협이었다.

 

우측으로 밀린 공 하나가 수면 위로 사라졌다. 핀을 향한 욕심이 깊어질수록 호수는 더 가까이 느껴졌다.

레이크사이드의 호수는 아름다웠다. 그리고 냉정했다. 호수에 시선이 빼앗긴 순간, 스코어는 이미 흔들리고 있었다.

 

레이크사이드CC가 공식적으로 꼽는 동코스 시그니처 홀은 6번 홀이다.

 

지원팀 조철완 팀장은 "이곳은 사계절의 변화가 가장 뚜렷하게 나타나는 곳으로, 홀에 들어서는 순간 탁 트인 빼어난 경관이 압권"이라며 "계절마다 옷을 갈아입는 자연의 아름다움을 만끽할 수 있어 많은 골퍼가 카메라를 드는 명소"라고 설명했다.

■ 페어웨이는 거짓말하지 않았다

 

좋은 골프장은 페어웨이가 증명한다.

 

티샷이 떨어지는 순간 바로 느껴졌다. 발이 닿는 순간 스펀지를 밟는 느낌이었다. 탄력 있게 발을 받아주는 잔디. 억지로 만든 부드러움이 아니었다.

 

이 탄성의 비결을 코스관리 박광희 팀장에게 물었다.

 

"코스 관리의 정답은 언제나 기본에 있다"는 답이 돌아왔다.

 

시비(施肥·비료 주기), 예지(刈芝·잔디 깎기), 병충해 방제. 코스 관리의 3대 기본기였다. 원칙을 지키는 관리가 사계절 균일한 품질을 만든다는 설명이었다.

 

페어웨이 예초고(刈草高·잔디를 깎아 남겨두는 높이)는 4월부터 11월까지 22mm로 관리한다. 동절기와 이른 봄에는 잔디 보호를 위해 25mm로 높인다.

 

잔디 밀도는 안정적이었다. 디봇 자국도 크게 눈에 거슬리지 않았다. 러프 역시 방치된 느낌이 없었다.
