[No Byeong-han’s Wellspring of Wisdom] There is a wide range of interpretations and opinions regarding the phrase "Please join in—with *jwa-a* (left-elegance)—" posted by President Lee Jae-myung on his X (social media) account on October 1st.
Words are vessels that hold reality and gateways that open up new ideas. When familiar words are twisted to create novel expressions, people may smile, but they also begin to question the underlying meaning. The attempt to coin the term "*jwa-a*" (left-elegance) as a counterpart to "*u-a*" (elegance/right-elegance) falls into this category. However, a phrase that sounds amusing and a concept that holds up logically must undergo different forms of validation.
"*Jwa-a*" can certainly be proposed as a newly coined term. Yet, the status of being the opposite of "*u-a*"—a word denoting refinement and grace—is not automatically conferred. The freedom to coin a word and the responsibility to explain its meaning go hand in hand.
First, one must examine the Chinese characters closely. The National Institute of Korean Language’s *Basic Korean Dictionary* defines "*u-a*" (elegance) as "refined and beautiful." Here, the character *u* (優) does not signify "right" (*u*, 右). Therefore, replacing the *u* (優) in "*u-a*" with *jwa* (左, left) is not a word-formation process based on the inherent oppositional relationship of the characters; rather, it is a play on words that draws associations from similar sounds.
This distinction, though seemingly minor, is significant. The relationship between *jwa* (left) and *u* (right) is an opposition of direction, whereas the relationship between elegance and vulgarity is a contrast in refinement. Direction and refinement are judged by different criteria. Being on the left does not make something unbeautiful, nor does being on the right... ...nor does it possess dignity simply for that reason. Lumping together disparate standards might sharpen one’s rhetoric, but it can also cloud one’s thinking.
Does this mean the term *jwa-a* (literally "Left-self") cannot be used? Not necessarily. Literature and satire can generate new meanings through unconventional combinations. What matters is first clarifying the intended meaning of the term.
For instance, suppose I define *jwa-a* as "possessing a dignified exterior while one’s words and actions deviate from the values one professes." In doing so, I am assigning a new, figurative meaning of "deviation" to the character *jwa* (Left). This is not a standard dictionary definition but a creative one tailored to this column.
Such a definition allows for a meaningful contrast. We can interpret *u-a* (literally "Right-self," but also a homophone for "elegance") as a state of dignity where words and actions harmonize, while defining *jwa-a* as a mere facade where that harmony is broken. However, even in this case, one must acknowledge that *u-a* is being used in a sense broader than its original aesthetic meaning—since a graceful appearance does not guarantee moral goodness.
Consider a leader who speaks of respect from the podium yet insults dissenting opinions during meetings; a rift exists between their courteous speech and their abrasive conduct. Or imagine a company that claims to value people in its advertisements but ignores workers' voices on the ground; here, a polished image masks a lack of responsibility.
Labeling such behavior as *jwa-a* can be a satirical choice. Yet, one must also consider exactly what this reveals more precisely than familiar terms like "hypocrisy" or "mere posturing." ...must be explained. For a new name to be necessary, it must capture a distinct difference.
Confusion regarding meaning is particularly likely in political contexts. If the "jwa" (left) in *jwa-a* is interpreted as "Left-wing" and the "u" (right) in *u-a* as "Right-wing," a discussion on dignity shifts into an evaluation of political camps. At that moment, the neologism risks becoming a label used to disparage an opponent rather than a tool for examining behavior. Only when the same standard is applied to the hypocrisy of both the Right and the Left can the term gain persuasive power as a concept discussing dignity.
Elegance is not the exclusive property of any political camp. It manifests in restrained speech, an attitude of respect toward others, the courage to admit mistakes, and the act of keeping promises. To judge dignity, one must look at actions rather than affiliations, and observe consistent practices rather than mere impressions.
One must observe the person to distinguish between refined expression and depth of character, and gauge the timing to discern between moments suitable for a joke and those requiring a formal explanation. One must consider the setting—weighing the responsibility of one's words against the speaker's authority—and assess the situation to reflect on whether a witty remark broadens understanding or inflames conflict.
Ultimately, the pairing of *u-a* (Right-wing elegance) and *jwa-a* (Left-wing elegance) is difficult to justify as a strict antonymic relationship based on the original meanings of the Chinese characters. However, it can be proposed as a creative, satirical contrast with clearly defined meanings and scopes of application. Whether it becomes a widely used neologism depends on its acceptance by readers and society at large.
A good neologism first captures the ear, then engages the mind. If a neologism retains only wit, it remains a mere fad; however, if it captures a real-world difference... When clearly articulated, even a new term can fully mature into a robust concept.
To speak of elegance, look to the texture of one’s actions rather than the mere styling of one’s words.
To critique a stance as "left-leaning" (or ideologically skewed), point out the inconsistencies between words and deeds rather than focusing on the opposing camp.
The dignity of a new term is determined not by whom it has triumphed over,
but by what it has allowed us to see more clearly.
