Korean Film Producers Association Expresses Concern Over "Excessive Criticism of Creators" Amid *Assassins* Controversy
Statement released on the 1st; hopes for "constructive discussion"
By Park Dong-je, Break News – Amid intensifying controversy over alleged historical distortion in the film *Assassins* (working title), the Korean Film Producers Association has expressed concern regarding the "ongoing excessive criticism directed at the creators."
On the 1st, the association issued a statement regarding the film *Assassins*, noting, "It is a natural and necessary process for diverse evaluations and criticisms of films and cultural artworks to take place freely. Particularly with works based on historical events or real-life figures, differing opinions may arise depending on the audience's perspectives and interpretations, and such diverse voices should be respected."
The association continued, "However, separate from the evaluation of the work itself, we express concern over the spread of unverified information regarding the production process or the participating creators, as well as the situation where individual creators—including production companies, directors, actors, and staff—face excessive criticism simply for having participated in the project."
They added, "Films are cultural creations completed through the long-term collaboration of numerous creators and production staff. Narrative films dealing with actual events or historical subject matter are also crafted by combining dramatic structure and cinematic imagination with relevant records and materials. Therefore, we believe it is desirable for evaluations regarding a work's expression and interpretation to focus on the work itself."
The Korean Film Producers Association also addressed the position held by the production team of *Assassins*. The production team of *The Assassins* has previously stated that the film is a dramatization based on historical events—reconstructed by blending cinematic imagination with various records and materials—and has publicly clarified that certain recent allegations regarding its production and financing are factually incorrect. The Korean Film Producers Association stated, “Through this discussion, we do not intend to pass judgment on specific historical interpretations or social arguments, nor do we seek to endorse any particular side.”
They further remarked, “However, we believe it is detrimental to the healthy production environment of Korean cinema when discussions surrounding a film extend beyond evaluating the work itself to become attacks on the individuals involved—such as the production company, director, actors, and staff—or lead to the spread of unverified information.”
In conclusion, they added, “For Korean cinema to continue freely exploring diverse subjects and stories, we need an environment where audience evaluation and criticism are guaranteed, while creators can work without fear of excessive external pressure. We hope this discussion proceeds calmly and constructively within the realms of art and creativity, while respecting differing opinions. We also hope that criticism and evaluation of the film will be grounded in fact and that the creative efforts of everyone involved—including the production company, director, actors, and staff—will be respected.”
Starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Min-ho, *The Assassins* traces the suspicions and the masterminds behind the attempted assassination of the First Lady—an event that shocked South Korea on August 15, 1974. The film is based on the shooting of Yuk Young-soo, the wife of former President Park Chung-hee. Following the release of *Assassins*, some political and social circles claimed the film distorted history by featuring plot elements that suggested former President Park Chung-hee might have been linked to the assassination plot.
In response, the production team of *Assassins* issued a statement on the 28th of last month, explaining, "This is a narrative film reconstructed by adding cinematic imagination to various records regarding the incident." They added, "The film does not identify any specific individual as the mastermind behind the incident, nor does it present its hypotheses or dramatic elements as historical facts. We ask that the work be viewed simply as a product of creative imagination."
Subsequently, rumors emerged regarding the influx of Chinese capital into the film. On the 29th of last month, the production company, Hive Media Corp, issued a statement clarifying, "There was absolutely no influx of Chinese capital during the production or investment stages. This project was independently planned and produced using domestic capital, led by a Korean production team and creative staff." They further stated, "As details regarding investment and production capital are facts that can be objectively verified, we hope that information contrary to the truth will not be further propagated or circulated."
