Stray Kids Follow BTS in Boycotting Grammy Awards Amid Controversy Over New ‘Asian Pop’ Category

BBC: “Stray Kids’ Boycott a Major Blow to the Grammys”

By Park Dong-je, Break News — Leading K-pop group Stray Kids has joined global superstars BTS in boycotting the Grammy Awards, the most prestigious music awards ceremony in the United States.

According to reports from the music industry and foreign media outlets such as Billboard and the BBC on the 2nd (local time), their agency, JYP Entertainment, announced that Stray Kids did not submit any music for consideration for the 69th Grammy Awards, scheduled for next February.

This decision came just one day after Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy—the organization behind the Grammys—issued a statement on the 1st (local time) declaring that they would proceed with the new "Asian Pop" category, noting that there was strong support for its creation.

Stray Kids had been considered a top contender for the planned Asian Pop category. The group has topped the US Billboard 200 main album chart nine times, and all eight members hold voting rights for the Grammys.

Notably, the BBC reported that "Stray Kids' boycott will be a major blow to the Grammys."

The Grammy Awards had previously announced in June the creation of the Asian Pop category, citing the significant influence of Asian music on the global music industry. However, some have criticized the move, suggesting it effectively segregates Asian music—such as K-pop—from Western music and excludes it from competing for major awards like "Song of the Year" and "Record of the Year."

In response, the seven members of BTS announced a boycott on July 29 via their respective social media channels, stating, "We have decided not to submit our work for the Grammys this year," and adding, "We hope that music is heard and loved for what it is, rather than being categorized by region or language."

Meanwhile, the Grammy Awards, organized by the U.S. Recording Academy, are considered one of the three major U.S. popular music awards ceremonies, alongside the Billboard Music Awards and the American Music Awards.
