초지일관 코로나백신을 거부한 노박 조코비치(2위·세르비아)의 스폰서후원계약이 철회될 전망이다.
신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 백신 접종을 거부, 지난 1월 호주오픈을 포함해 주요 대회 출전이 잇따라 무산되고 있는 노박 조코비치. 조코비치가 경제적으로 큰 손실을 입을 것 같다.
영국 일간지 데일리 익스프레스는 10일(한국시간) 조코비치의 메인 스폰서인 프랑스 의류업체 라코스테가 그와 맺은 3년간의 후원계약을 철회할 것으로 보인다고 보도했다. 라코스테는 조코비치의 백신 거부로 인해 부정적인 언론보도가 양산 됐다. 브랜드의 얼굴을 교체하고 싶어 한다고 짚었다.
라코스테는 지난 2017년 조코비치의 생일인 5월 22일 스폰서 계약을 체결했다. 해당 계약은 올해 종료될 예정이었다. 그러나 지난해 8월 양측은 3년 연장에 합의했다.
하지만 라코스테는 조코비치의 백신 거부 사태가 지속되면서 부정적인 이미지가 더 크게 쌓일 것을 우려했다. 계약 해지를 검토 중인 것으로 알려졌다.
조코비치는 이달 미국에서 열리는 남자 프로테니스(ATP) 투어 마스터스1000시리즈 대회인 BNP 파리바오픈과 마이애미오픈 출전이 좌절 됐다. 미국의 백신 정책 때문이다.
메인 스폰서를 잃게 되면 조코비치는 3년간 총 371억 원, 1년 129억 원을 잃게 된다. 앞서 프랑스 자동차 업체 푸조가 조코비치와의 후원계약 파기 방침을 밝힌 바 있다.
한편 라코스테는 지난 1일 6차례 그랜드슬램 타이틀을 차지한 비너스 윌리엄스와 수백만 달러 규모의 홍보 모델 계약을 체결한 바 있다.

Novak Djokovic (2nd, Serbia), who refused to receive a consistent COVID-19 vaccine, is expected to withdraw his sponsorship contract.
Novak Djokovic, who refused to be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus infection disease (COVID-19), has failed to participate in major competitions, including the Australian Open in January. Djokovic is likely to suffer a huge economic loss.
The British daily Daily Express reported on the 10th (Korea Standard Time) that Djokovic's main sponsor, French clothing company Lacoste, is expected to withdraw its three-year sponsorship contract with him. Lacoste has produced negative media reports due to Djokovic's rejection of the vaccine. He pointed out that he wanted to replace the brand's face.
Lacoste signed a sponsorship contract on May 22, Djokovic's birthday in 2017. The contract was scheduled to end this year. However, in August last year, the two sides agreed to a three-year extension.
However, Lacoste was concerned that the negative image would accumulate more as Djokovic continued to reject the vaccine. It is known that they are considering terminating the contract.
Djokovic failed to participate in the BNP Paribas Open and Miami Open, the men's ATP Tour Masters 1000 Series competition held in the U.S. this month. It is because of the vaccine policy in the United States.
If the main sponsor is lost, Djokovic will lose a total of 37.1 billion won over three years and 12.9 billion won a year. Earlier, French automaker Peugeot announced its plan to destroy its sponsorship contract with Djokovic.
Meanwhile, Lacoste signed a multi-million-dollar promotional model contract with Venus Williams, who won six Grand Slam titles on the 1st.
