샷이면 샷, 퍼팅이면 퍼팅 안되는 게 없었다.
세계남자골프랭킹 10위, 호주 캐머런 스미스가 골프대회 사상 역대 최다 상금이 걸린 2022년 미국프로골프(PGA) 투어 플레이어스 챔피언십(총상금 2,000만달러) 우승을 차지했다.
지난 1월 지난해 우승자들만 참가하는 ‘왕중왕전’인 미국프로골프(PGA)투어 센트리 토너먼트 오브 챔피언스에서 34언더파 258타로 PGA 투어 최다 언더파 기록(72홀 기준)을 세우며 우승했던 캐머런 스미스였다.
스미스는 15일(한국시간) 미국 플로리다주 폰테베드라 비치의 TPC 소그래스 스타디움 코스(파72·7,256야드)에서 열린 대회 닷새째인 마지막 날 4라운드에서 버디 10개를 잡아내고 보기 4개를 엮어 6언더파 66타를 쳤다.
최종 합계 13언더파 275타를 작성한 스미스는 이날 3타를 줄인 2위 아니르반 라히리(인도)를 1타 차로 따돌렸다.
2017년 2인1조 경기였던 취리히 클래식에서 PGA 투어 첫 우승을 신고한 스미스는 올해 1월 '왕중왕전' 센트리 토너먼트 오브 챔피언스에서 현재 최강자 존 람(스페인)을 꺾고 우승했다. 약 2개월만에 '제5의 메이저대회'로 불리는 플레이어스 챔피언십 정상까지 밟으며 PGA 투어 통산 5승, 그리고 시즌 2승을 달성했다.
거액의 우승 상금 360만달러(약 44억2,000만원)를 차지한 스미스는 시즌 상금을 579만7,375달러로 늘렸다.
이번 대회는 첫날부터 폭우와 강풍 등으로 경기가 차례로 지연되면서 하루 더 연장해 닷새 동안 열렸다.
세계랭킹 상위 50명 중에서 46명이 참가한 이번 대회는 첫날부터 낙뢰, 강풍, 비, 추위 등 악천후가 몰려와 날마다 순연과 잔여 경기를 되풀이했다. 나흘째 2라운드를 겨우 마치고 3라운드를 시작했다. 하지만 다 마치기에는 시간이 부족했다. 결국 현지 날짜로 월요일인 이날 3라운드 잔여 경기와 최종라운드를 한 번에 진행했다.
스미스는 첫날 3언더파 69타를 쳐 1라운드를 일찌감치 끝냈지만, 둘째 날에는 오후 조에 편성돼 있어서 경기를 치르지 못했다. 결국 마지막 날 3라운드 11번홀부터 시작했다.
전날 3라운드 1~10번 홀에서 2타를 줄였던 스미스는 돌아온 코스에서 17번홀(파3) 버디를 더해 3라운드까지 중간 합계 7언더파 6위를 기록했다. 54홀 선두 라히리와는 2타 차이였다.
이어진 4라운드에서 스미스는 초반부터 공격적인 플레이를 선보였다. 1~4번홀에서 4연속 버디를 뽑아낸 뒤 6번홀(파4) 버디까지 추가해 5타를 줄여 중간 성적 12언더파를 달렸다.
그러나 그린을 놓친 7번홀(파4)에서 보기를 하면서 흔들렸고, 8번(파3), 9번(파5)까지 연달아 보기를 적었다.
샷 이글을 할 뻔한 10번홀(파4)에서 버디로 분위기를 바꾼 스미스는 13번 홀까지 다시 4연속 버디를 잡아내며 선두로 올라섰다. 스미스가 14번 홀까지 중간 성적 13언더파를 달릴 때 키건 브래들리(미국)가 12언더파 2위, 폴 케이시(잉글랜드)와 라히리가 11언더파 공동 3위에서 추격했다.
TPC 소그래스의 시그니처 홀인 '아일랜드 그린' 17번홀(파3)에서 버디를 추가한 스미스는 우승에 쐐기를 박는 듯했다. 하지만 18번홀(파4)에서 두 번째 샷을 물에 빠뜨려 보기로 홀아웃했다. 그 사이 챔피언조의 라히리가 17번홀에서 버디를 낚으며 1타 차로 추격해왔다.
라히리는 마지막 홀 세컨드 샷을 그린에 올리지 못했고, 큰 무리 없이 파로 마무리하면서 클럽하우스 선두 스미스의 우승이 확정되었다.
2020년 소니오픈에 이어 이번 대회까지 하와이에서 두 차례 우승컵을 들었다. 2인 1조 팀플레이로 열리는 취리히 클래식에서 2017년과 2021년 두 차례 정상에 올랐다. 스미스는 세계 상위순위자 144명이 참가하는 플레이어스챔피언십에서 우승하면서 세계 정상급 선수임을 입증했다.

Cameron Smith of Australia, ranked 10th in the world's men's golf rankings, won the 2022 Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour Players Championship (total prize money of $20 million) with the most prize money in golf tournament history.
Cameron Smith won last January at the PGA Tour Century Tournament of Champions, a "King of Kings" involving only last year's winners, setting the PGA Tour's most under-par record (based on 72 holes) with a 34-under-par 258.
Smith caught 10 birdies in the fourth round on the fifth day of the tournament at the TPC Sogras Stadium Course (par 72, 7,256 yards) in Pontevedra Beach, Florida, on the 15th (Korea Standard Time), and made four bogeys to hit a 6-under 66.
Smith, who scored a total of 13-under 275, beat second-place Anirvan Rahiri (India), who reduced three strokes, by one stroke.
Smith, who reported his first PGA Tour title at the Zurich Classic in 2017, beat the current strongest John Lam (Spain) at the Central Tournament of Champions in January this year. In about two months, he reached the top of the Players Championship, dubbed the "fifth major tournament," achieving five PGA Tour wins and two wins of the season.
Smith, who won a large amount of prize money of $3.6 million (about $4.42 billion), increased his season prize money to $5.797,375.
The tournament was held for five days, extending one more day, as the game was delayed one after another due to heavy rain and strong winds from the first day.
The tournament, in which 46 out of the world's top 50 participated, has been flooded with bad weather such as lightning, strong winds, rain, and cold from the first day, repeating the postponement and remaining games every day. On the fourth day, he barely finished the second round and started the third round. However, there was not enough time to finish. In the end, the remaining third round and the final round were held at once on Monday, the local date.
Smith finished the first round early with a 3-under 69 on the first day, but failed to play on the second day because he was in the afternoon group. In the end, it started with the 11th hole in the third round on the last day.
Smith, who reduced two strokes on the first to 10th holes in the third round the previous day, added a birdie on the 17th hole (par 3) on the return course to finish sixth at 7-under-par until the third round. It was two strokes away from the 54-hole leader Rahiri.
In the following fourth round, Smith showed aggressive play from the beginning. After scoring four consecutive birdies on the 1st to 4th holes, he added birdies on the 6th hole (par 4) to reduce five shots to 12 under par.
However, he was shaken by a bogey on the 7th hole (par 4), which missed the green, and wrote bogeys consecutively up to 8th (par 3) and 9th (par 5).
Smith, who changed the mood with a birdie on the 10th hole (par 4), which almost made a shot eagle, took the lead by catching four consecutive birdies until the 13th hole. Keegan Bradley of the U.S. (USA) came in second at 12-under and Paul Casey (England) and Rahiri tied for third at 11-under when Smith ran 13-under until the 14th hole.
Smith, who added a birdie at the 17th hole (par 3) of "Ireland Green," the signature hole of TPC Sogras, seemed to be wedging the championship. However, on the 18th hole (par 4), he tried to drown his second shot. In the meantime, Rahiri of the champion group has been chasing by one stroke by catching a birdie on the 17th hole.
Rahiri failed to put the second shot on the green on the last hole and finished with a par without much difficulty, confirming the clubhouse leader Smith's victory.
Following the 2020 Sony Open, he has won two cups in Hawaii so far. He reached the top twice in 2017 and 2021 at the Zurich Classic, which will be held as a team play of two people. Smith proved to be the world's top player by winning the Players Championship, which includes 144 world-class players.
