스리랑카 콜롬보의 집값이 폭등하다 보니 ‘에어비앤비’ 형태의 공유가 외국인에겐 유용한 방편의 하나다. 나도 지금 이러한 공유 숙박을 하고 있다. 나만의 적당한 주거공간을 가지면서 일부 시설은 함께 쓰고 있다. 대부분 최소 1달 이상의 장기 거주 목적이다.

같은 집에 인도 사람이 살고 있다. 첫 인상이 서글서글한, 40대 중반의 직장인이다. 인도의 실리콘밸리로 불리는 뱅갈루루 출신이다. 내가 인도에서 3년 정도 살았다는 점을 듣고는 더욱 살갑게 다가온다. 평소에 그는 마치 ‘딸 바보’처럼 행동하고 있다. 현재 인도학교의 7학년인 딸은 한국 사랑에 듬뿍 빠져 있는데, 나와의 영상통화를 통해 한국에 대한 솔직한 느낌을 숨기지 않을 정도다. 이렇게 낯선 사람과 이국 생활을 즐기고 있다.

그런데 그에 대해 조금씩 궁금해지기 시작한다. 왜 인도 사람이 여기까지 오게 됐을까? 무슨 비즈니스를 하고 있을까? 뱅갈루루는 인도에서 신흥 부자들이 많은 곳으로 유명한데.

놀랍게도 그는 카지노 산업과 관련된 일을 하고 있다. 솔직히 나는 카지노에 대해 전혀 문외한이다. 관심도 없고, 어떻게 게임을 하는지도 모른다. 20여년전 미국 서부를 여행하면서 라스베가스를 방문, 카지노를 그냥 구경했던 것이 유일한 경험이다.

그 인도 친구는 자신의 하는 일을 신나게 설명하기 시작한다. 먼저 스리랑카의 카지노 산업이 새로운 도약을 꿈꾸고 있다면서. 국가가 직접 나서고 있으며, 2025년에 관련법규를 정비했다고 한다. 이제는 글로벌 스탠다드를 추구하고 있다.

He feels even more at home after learning that I've lived in India for about three years. He usually acts like a doting father. His daughter, currently in seventh grade at an Indian school, is deeply in love with Korea, and she doesn't hide her honest feelings about it during video calls with me. We're enjoying life in a foreign country with this stranger.

But then, I start to become more curious about him. Why would an Indian come here? What kind of business is he running? Bangalore is famous for having many nouveau riche people in India.
