■ 〈2〉The Car YouTube Raved About vs. The Car the Reporter Drove — The True Nature of the Gap
■ YouTubers Received Invitations — The Reporter Got a Ticket Number
By Park Cheol-seong, Veteran Journalist / 〈Director of the Research Center · Columnist〉
▲This was the road the YouTubers drove. The road the reporter drove was downtown Bundang. Photo = Hyundai Motor
YouTubers received invitations. The reporter made a reservation on his smartphone. Same car. But a completely different car.
The way automotive channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers handled the IONIQ 9 was astonishing. "A new benchmark," "the pinnacle of refinement," "flagship-level prestige" — superlatives overflowed. The IONIQ 9 on screen made the reporter wonder whether it was even the same car he had just driven.
Where does this gap come from?
■ Invited Test Drive vs. Self-Arranged Test Drive — The Starting Lines Are Different
Hyundai Motor holds media test drive events and invites YouTubers. The course is optimal. The vehicle condition is optimal. Travel expenses and accommodation are covered by the manufacturer. The vehicles are in a perfectly maintained state right before delivery. The route is designed to maximize the car's strengths.
The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) guidelines are clear. When an economic benefit is received for a recommendation or introduction, it must be disclosed. This means somewhere in the video, the statement "This video was produced with manufacturer invitation and financial support" must appear.
However, among domestic automotive YouTube test drive videos, those that explicitly state this are extremely rare. Channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers are no exception. It is clear that money was received, even under the name of production costs, yet disclosure is far more often absent than present.
In some cases, the direction is reversed. YouTubers approach manufacturers first. They propose sponsorships, receive advertising fees, and produce test drive videos. Whether the manufacturer calls or the YouTuber approaches, the conclusion is the same. The money, the vehicle, and the course are all in the manufacturer's hands.
The reporter, by contrast, walked in on his own two feet for a ride-along test drive. Driving Lounge, Bundang. A one-hour accompanied test drive. A Car Master sat in the passenger seat to guide. The reporter took the wheel. The course was also the reporter's choice. Sections where the car's weaknesses might surface were deliberately selected. The driving time was limited, but within that time, the reporter pushed the car as hard as possible.
Same model. But fundamentally different conditions of experience.
■ The Structural Limitations of YouTube Test Drive Reviews
There is the annual automotive planning survey by research specialist Consumer Insight. It ranks first among the information channels most frequently used by imported car buyers during their research. YouTube test drive videos, at 30%. The proportion has risen sharply compared to 2019. This means consumers are relying on YouTube test drive videos for purchasing decisions worth tens of millions of won. How independently those videos were produced is an entirely separate matter.
Automotive YouTubers' test drive reviews are structurally vulnerable to criticism. The manufacturer provides the vehicle. Covers invitation costs. In some cases, even executes advertising fees. The KFTC, in its 2025 revised review guidelines, explicitly designated the concealment or omission of information about economically compensated recommendations and introductions as a form of deceptive labeling and advertising. Yet in automotive test drive videos, the statement "This video was produced with manufacturer invitation and financial support" is rarely to be found.
The gap that exists between manufacturer-invited test drives and self-arranged test drives. That is what has divided YouTube's effusive praise from the reporter's disappointment.
■ The Community Already Knew
While the YouTubers lavished praise, the community was cold-eyed. On Naver cafes including the IONIQ 9 Owners Club and EV Owners Club, the sharp reactions that poured in immediately after test drives remain alive and unfiltered.
Responses repeatedly circulating throughout the community said that had the ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) anxiety been fully resolved, they would have bought the car. Self-deprecating voices emerged saying all one can do is trust the 1% failure rate and pray it won't happen to them. The reality of having to pray after buying a 70-million-won new car.
Cases were reported of the third-row seat failing entirely to respond when operated electronically from the trunk immediately after delivery of a new vehicle, and the second-row left seat also failing to function. Cases of the driver's side lower molding being assembled and delivered in white — clashing entirely with the interior color — were repeatedly raised. The criticism of how brand trust can possibly be recovered when such problems repeat themselves in vehicles worth tens of millions of won has not subsided.
These voices are absent from YouTube videos. They overflow in the community.
■ Whose Test Drive Review Should Consumers Trust
It is not our conclusion that automotive YouTubers are lying. However, a test drive review experienced on a course designed by the manufacturer, in a car maintained by the manufacturer, at the manufacturer's expense, is fundamentally not the consumer's perspective.
The reporter has held a steering wheel for over 40 years since obtaining a Class 1 large vehicle license in 1983. He has driven hundreds of cars. That body spoke at the Driving Lounge in Bundang. This car does not feel worth 70 million won.
What consumers must trust in the final moment of a purchasing decision is not the polished subtitles in a YouTube video. It is the sensation their own body directly feels. And before that, an honest piece of writing by someone who received no invitation.
Part 3 examines the IONIQ 9's true competitors. What can be bought for the same money?
※ This article was written based on the reporter's direct experience during a personally reserved test drive at Hyundai Motor's Driving Lounge in Bundang on April 1, 2026. No invitation, vehicle provision, or any other form of support was received.
