[Roundup] Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee’s ‘Intern’ Offers Warm Support and Comfort to All Generations

The Best ‘Healing Movie’ of This Chuseok, Scheduled for Release on the 16th

Break News Reporter Park Dong-je = The movie <Intern> (Director Kim Do-young) has finally been unveiled. Starring actors Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee, <Intern> has raised expectations and proven itself to be the best ‘healing movie’ of this Chuseok season by offering warm support and comfort to all generations.

In <Intern>, ‘legendary actor’ Choi Min-sik and ‘trending actor’ Han So-hee created synergy that transcends generations, delivering everything from delightful laughter to broad empathy. In particular, Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee completed multi-dimensional characters through irreplaceable passionate performances, elevating the level of immersion in the film. In addition to them, Kim Jun-han, Ryu Hye-young, Kim Geum-soon, Park Ye-ni, Kim Yo-han, Im Sung-kyun, and Yoon Sang-jung also completed a solid ensemble, making the 132-minute running time fly by in an instant.

The press conference held after the press and distribution preview of *Intern* at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 4th drew attention with the attendance of Director Kim Do-young and actors Choi Min-sik, Han So-hee, Kim Jun-han, and Ryu Hye-young.

*Intern* is a film depicting an office life that transcends generations and ranks, beginning when 'Ki-ho' (Choi Min-sik), a senior intern with 37 years of experience, joins the company of 'Sun-woo' (Han So-hee), which has rapidly emerged as a dark horse in the fashion industry just three years after its launch. In particular, this film is a remake of the Hollywood movie of the same name, which was released in 2015 and loved worldwide, and expectations are rising as it is directed by Kim Do-young, director of *If We*.

In *Intern*, Choi Min-sik plays Ki-ho, a senior intern with 37 years of experience who is starting his second job after retirement; Han So-hee plays Sun-woo, a workaholic CEO who has built Ututu into a dark horse in the fashion industry within three years of its launch; Kim Jun-han plays Young-hwan, a pragmatic vice president; and Ryu Hye-young plays Min-ah, a management support team leader obsessed with AI.

When asked about their feelings on presenting *Intern* for the first time ahead of its release on the 16th, Director Kim Do-young said, "We worked hard and put our hearts into making this, so I am happy that we can release it like this." Choi Min-sik added, "This is the first time I have properly seen the finished film. Rather than focusing on my own evaluation, I watched it with a touching heart as I thought about the production process. We did our best."

Han So-hee said, “I saw the finished movie for the first time today, and I was so nervous I could barely think straight. With the release just around the corner, I feel more excited than worried.” Kim Jun-han remarked, “I saw the movie for the first time, and even though it is our film, I was so deeply moved that I almost burst into tears. I want to share this heartwarming story with many people.” Ryu Hye-young expressed confidence, stating, “I also saw the finished version for the first time, and as I left the theater, I felt a pleasant and warm energy, so I feel like it is going to be a huge hit.”

When asked about the unique charm of the Korean version of *Intern*, Choi Min-sik stated, “I feel a bit shy boasting about a movie I starred in. Since the original was so well-loved, I started with a lot of pressure, but I felt it would be uncomfortable to carry that burden forever.” He continued, “There are many instances where good works and music are reinterpreted, aren’t there? There is a song called ‘Bonguri’ by the late Kim Min-ki, and I was deeply moved when Han Young-ae covered it. Honestly, Han Young-ae probably didn’t try to sing it better than Kim Min-ki, did she? We felt the same way. We wanted to create our own *Intern* in our own way. Please bear with us even if there are shortcomings; we did our best.”

Han So-hee shared, “I felt pressure regarding the original and the immense love it received, but that pressure completely disappeared during the first day of filming. I trusted in our own unique sensibility and our own approach. More than anything else, I think I paid more attention to the combination and harmony of the characters.”

Kim Jun-han stated, “I was so deeply moved that my emotions are still wavering,” and added, “Isn’t the most significant difference the language? Korean has honorifics and informal speech. Depending on how they are used, they convey various nuances. I felt that perhaps we were missing the simple words an elder can offer to their juniors—a sense of elders. I was able to feel the warmth and emotion unique to our *Intern*.”

Ryu Hye-young replied, “When I first heard that *Intern* was being remade, I wasn’t the type to watch movies multiple times, nor did I tend to remember details. So, the original only left me with a vague impression.” She continued, “When I received the offer for *Intern*, I thought it was a warm film, a good film, and a film that conveys warmth, so I jumped into the project. I didn’t look up the original separately; I just wanted to convey warmth and empathy in our own way.”

Regarding the differences between his character in *Intern* and the original work, Choi Min-sik quipped, “To be honest, being compared to others is not a pleasant experience. I knew this would happen from the moment I decided to participate in *Intern*. Whether it is the media or the public, comparisons are inevitable. I don’t particularly want to compare myself to De Niro, and I feel it would be disrespectful to even mention it myself.” He continued, “The original was truly excellent, and as an audience member myself, it was a source of healing. We were Choi Min-sik, Han So-hee, Kim Jun-han, and Ryu Hye-young, and the director was Kim Do-young. I hope the comparisons stop here.”

In particular, Choi Min-sik drew laughter by responding, “Han So-hee and Anne Hathaway? Anne Hathaway is a truly great actress. *The Odyssey*, wow.” He then showed off his exceptional affection for his junior colleague, adding, “Han So-hee has her own unique strengths. After working with her this time and watching the finished film on the big screen, seeing Han So-hee’s acting made me feel so good and proud.” Han So-hee stated, “Since Choi Min-sik has his own unique vibe and acting style, it was completely different from the original. Of course, it is absurd for me to even mention it. Also, I believe Choi Min-sik’s acting in *Intern* possesses unrivaled qualities that cannot be seen in the original.”

Regarding the process of remaking the Korean version of *Intern*, Director Kim Do-young said, “When remaking a work, we take the good points of the original and change the parts we want to change. I consider the Korean version of *Intern* to be about Sun-woo’s growth. I wanted the characters to feel more grounded than in the original, and regarding the relationship between Sun-woo and Ki-ho, while situations similar to the original unfold, I think I wanted to offer a different kind of freshness.”

Han So-hee said, “Because Choi Min-sik has his own distinct vibe and acting style, it was completely different from the original. Director Kim Do-young added, “Isn’t generational conflict significant these days? When there is a generation gap, it feels awkward, difficult, and unfamiliar. However, I believe our film *Intern* will have a positive influence in that regard. The relationships between Sun-woo and Ki-ho, as well as between Ki-ho and his colleagues at the company, change throughout the film. I wanted to effectively convey through *Intern* how generational awkwardness transforms into closeness.”

Regarding the definition of a good adult and a good person, Choi Min-sik stated, “I still cannot define what a good adult is. I believe it is something we all need to contemplate together. However, I did ponder this. While playing Ki-ho in *Intern*, I wondered what it takes to become a good adult and what exactly constitutes a good adult. To be honest, I still don't quite know.”

** He added, “However, the thought that is vaguely taking root is that one simply needs to live well as a human being. Wouldn’t someone who lives with an open mind regarding the values of the world and humanity, and who admits their mistakes, be a good adult and a good person? This aspect, too, cannot be defined. Isn’t it enough for each person to simply live well? If one continues to regret, reflect, and contemplate such matters, wouldn’t that be the path to becoming a good adult?”

Finally, Director Kim Do-young, Choi Min-sik, Han So-hee, Kim Jun-han, and Ryu Hye-young stated, “We hope the message we wanted to convey through <Intern> is delivered well, and that you all witness the warmth and heartfelt sentiment the film offers.” They further added, “We hope <Intern> serves as a warm source of motivation for everyone, and since we put our heart and soul into making this film, we ask for your continued interest and love.”

Meanwhile, <Intern>, starring Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee, which has emerged as the most anticipated film of the Chuseok holiday season, is scheduled to be released on the 16th.
